What is Rekeying?
Rekeying is referred to by most people as “changing out the locks”. While it sometimes makes sense to replace the locks themselves, as locksmiths serving Bloomington IL, Normal IL and Central Illinois, we may also be able to rekey the locks without needing to replace them.
Why & When to Rekey?
Two of the main reasons for rekying your locks are to make it so one key can work in all locks (keyed alike) or to make sure that only the appropriate people can enter your home or building.
Having one key that works on all locks is referred to as “keyed alike”. Many homeowners and/or business owners find only having one key for all their locks to be more convenient and less cumbersome. Not to mention, it’s one less key to carry around and lose!
Another reason for rekeying is to ensure that only you and those you trust have access to your home or office. Below are some examples of when you should consider rekeying:
- New Home Rekeying- If you purchased a new home, there’s no way to know what all has keys to your house.
- Lost keys with identification- If you lost your keys along with information on where you live.
- Divorce- If you don’t want certain people to be able to access your home!
- New Renters- If you’re a landlord and don’t receive all your keys back or you are worried that key duplicates may have been made.
